The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter's The Thing is no. 30.

Plot - Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills

Tag line - Man is The Warmest Place to Hide.

I know that several of the actors were well known in 1982 but the only one familiar with me is Kurt Russell. Stuck in inhospitable surroundings a group of American scientists are attacked by an alien that has the ability to change appearance. Yeah already got that in the plot summary above huh? Well I enjoyed this movie but it is a bit dated. Still plenty spooky and makes you feel a bit claustrophobic. Everyone is a suspect and you never know who is not themselves until they turn into crazy looking creatures. If only they had killed the dang dog in the beginning. If only that dang dog did not look exactly like my dog Lily.

Trivia - This film is considered a benchmark in the field of special makeup effects. These effects were created by Rob Bottin, who was only 22 when he started the project.

The sound effect of the Antarctic wind was actually recorded in the desert outside Palm Springs.
