No. 29 The People Under the Stairs
Plotline: The People Under the Stairs is the story of a young boy from the ghetto and takes place on his 13th birthday. In an attempted burglary of the home of his family's evil landlords, he becomes trapped inside their large suburban house and discovers the secret of the "children" that the insane brother and sister have been "rearing" under the stairs.
Tag line: In every neighborhood there is one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid.
Trivia: Wes Craven was inspired to write this film after seeing a real-life news story about parents who locked their children up inside their house, never allowing them outside.
Starring: Everett McGill and Wendy Robie of Twin Peaks fame as "Mommy" and "Daddy", AJ Langer as "Alice", and Brandon Quintin Adams as "Fool". Ving Rhames and a few other slightly recognizable people.
Child abuse taken to a whole new level. "Mommy" and "Daddy" have taken vile, vicious treatment of others and made it into an art form. Everyone already knew they were horrible due to the way they treat their duties as landlords of several buildings. The plan was to rob them of all the money they had stolen from the tenants over the years but once inside their personal fortress the robbers quickly find they are in over their heads. Young "fool" is helped by "Alice" and the thing between the walls "roach" to escape the horror only to come back seeking to help "Alice" and all of the discarded stair people in the basement.
What always bothered me about this movie is that you know there are actually crazy freaks out there that might think like "Mommy" and "Daddy" do. Of all the Wes Craven movies out there I think this one was one of the better stories.
